Penang man charged for murder of China girl, 8

THE Penang man who was arrested by police on Sunday over the Huang Na case was on Monday charged in a Singapore court for her murder.

Took Leng How, 22 and a father of two, is being accused of having murdered the eight-year-old girl from Jin Tai Primary School in a storeroom of the Pasir Panjang Wholesale Market on Oct 10, the day she disappeared.

The girl’s mother, Madam Huang Shuying, who had on Sunday wailed hysterically at the hospital mortuary on identifying her daughter’s remains, attended court on Monday.

Asked by reporters if she still believed in Took’s innocence, she snapped back in Mandarin: ‘At this point in time, how can I not believe that he was involved?’

In the past three weeks, she had defended him against speculation that he was linked to her daughter’s disappearance. She not only worked with Took at the wholesale market where he was a packer; they also shared a three-room HDB flat in West Coast Road with three others.

The cherubic girl, the subject of a hunt by not only the police but members of the public in Singapore and Johor Bahru who handed out thousands of flyers, was found naked in a cardboard box in a dense undergrowth in Telok Blangah Hill Park on Sunday morning. The body was in an advanced state of decomposition.

Forensic tests are on-going to confirm the identity of the remains; police are also sifting through the storeroom at the wholesale centre, which bears signs of a struggle.

Just hours before her body was found, Took had been arrested and questioned by Singapore police. He had turned himself in to Malaysian police on Saturday and was brought to Singapore.

If he is convicted, he faces the death penalty.

Schoolmates mourn loss
On Monday, pupils and teachers from Jin Tai Primary School bowed their heads and observed a minute of silence during morning assembly.

School staff remembered Huang Na as a lively and talkative girl who was never without a smile on her face.

One staff member, who declined to be named, said he had to wear sunglasses to school to hide his tears.

‘She was a popular girl in school. She was also very friendly and would never fail to greet me and say hello,’ he said.

Her principal, Madam Zahara Yusoff, said Huang Na ‘was shy at first but she adapted to school well and made friends very quickly’.

Nur Liyana, eight, Huang Na’s classmate and close friend, was said to be coping well. She used to walk home from school together with Huang Na almost everyday.

Two teachers, who are trained as counsellors, are now on full alert to assist pupils and teachers affected by the news.

Son of a bitch, how ruthless to kill a little girl. Put him to death!
