Hong Kong: Dim Sum Icon x Gudetama

Gudetama is the latest fad in the Sanrio family. The lazy egg is so popular that Dim Sum Icon in Hong Kong has collaborated with Sanrio to come up with limited edition dim sum dishes of the character. I visited the restaurant in December 2015 and the next thing I knew, they had already changed the theme to Little Twin Stars, not as adorable I feel. tongue

The restaurant has a simple interior, decorated with posters of Gudetama. It was extremely packed during dinner time and we waited for about 45 minutes before we got a table. They had a queue system where you get a queue number for your turn but they don’t make any calls, so you have to wait around the area.

Their menu, with Gudetama’s selection in a cutely-designed poster.

Pan-fried Beancurd Sheet Roll with Shrimp, Deep-fried Shrimp Spring Roll and Squid Cake with Apricot & Cheese are tasty but I find that these 3 dishes are a tad too oily.

Pan-fried Glutinous Rice Dumpling with Egg was really good, but not as aromatic as the usual lo mai gai which is wrapped with lotus leaf. Steamed Rice Roll wrapped with Spring Roll is a pretty unique dim sum dish, probably my first time trying it, which has a soft and chewy texture.

Gudetama Custard Tarts has a buttery crust but the custard was too milky for my liking.

Gudetama Steamed Pork Dumplings topped with Scallops, Prawn Dumplings, Egg Yolk Buns, Chocolate Buns and Baked Buns with BBQ Pork were served next and I find that the buns are the cutest and we had a fun time poking the mouth and butt lol! Totally Instagram worthy! bigsmile These were really delicious, it was a pleasant surprise cos I heard that usually themed cafes serve yucky food but that’s not the case for Dim Sum Icon. smile

Gudetama Fried Rice with Bacon is one of the most simple and flavorful Chinese dishes to make. Simple yet warms the heart.
