Two years after the first outlet at VivoCity, Jamie’s Italian opened their second restaurant in the heart of Orchard Road at Forum The Shopping Mall. The intimate space of 129 seater has a rustic charm of Italian trattoria interior, furnished with an eclectic mix of reclaimed church chairs and upholstered armchairs that gives it a very luxurious vibe to the whole dining experience.
This branch offers a taste of Italy with dishes that reflect traditional Italian home-style cooking, imbued with Jamie Oliver’s modern flair for presentation and unique recipe twists. The restaurant’s pizza oven, signature antipasti and open kitchens take centre-stage, allowing guests a glimpse of the chefs at work. Watching the chefs busying around the kitchen makes me feel so intrigued and fascinated by their passion when they put all their heart in to make delicious food for everyone. smile
We started our meal with Cauliflower Fritti ($13.50). Made with crispy balls of cauliflower and parmesan, they are deep fried until golden brown and dusted with grated parmesan, chopped parsley, lemon zest and served with a fiery arrabbiata dip.
Italian Hot Pizza ($24.50) packs a flavourful punch and is made with a rich San Marzano tomato sauce, soppressata (dry salami), meatballs, buffalo mozzarella, chilli padi and pickled chillies. For the sauce, the tomatoes are pushed through a sieve and not blended and therefore retaining some texture in the sauce. The chillis added a little more depth to the flavour and it was really yummy to bite and chew that crust.
It was my first time trying a squid ink pasta and I was impressed by Octopus and Mussel Spaghetti ($26). The octopus and mussels are braised and cooked with ingredients like garlic, chilli, cherry tomatoes, parsley, white wine, capers, anchovies, vegetable stock, lemon juice, olive oil, etc. There are simply too many ingredients in this one dish. It was really satisfying to chomp down a bite after another and nope, my teeth didn’t turn black after that haha! bigsmile
Carbonara sauce in Penne Carbonara ($24) is made with onions and pancetta lardons (bacon) pan-fried till crisp. Leek and vegetable stock are also added to the sauce, together with parmesan and egg yolk to make it more flavourful.
All meats from Cured Meat Plank ($16.50/person) are sliced to order ensuring maximum freshness and flavour. The meat plank consists of San Daniele Prosciutto, hot soppressata (dry salami), mortadella (Italian cured sausage) and bresaola (salted beef). The plank is also loaded with mini buffalo mozzarella, pecorino and chilli jam, a beautiful selection of pickles, olives and crunchy salad. Definitely a huge favourite for meat lovers!
Lamb Chop Lollipops ($38) is fantastically tender, juicy and falls off the bone easily. It is grilled “al mattone” (with a brick) until pink and dressed in olive oil and lemon. The lamb is served with a rich creamy artichoke paste filled with mint and lemon to give a vibrant, fresh and zingy flavour to cut through the richness of the lamb.
(Note: Sadly, the Lamb Chop Lollipops are no longer on the menu. Diners can look forward to Lamb Chops Scottaditto ($44) instead. The lamb chops are grilled under a brick with red onion salad, toasted nuts & lemony yogurt for dunking.)
Creamy Panna Cotta ($11) is a real Italian classic of vanilla panna cotta topped with seasonal fresh fruit compote. A good panna cotta should be silky soft, creamy and just firm, with a gentle wobble. This, had achieved that perfect texture.
The meal is not complete without a glass of Jamie’s Italian Mojito ($18) or Florence Fizz ($18). We were so full that we had to roll out of the restaurant. Haha just kidding! tongue
